The Story: "For the 1979 model year, Ford introduced an all-new Mustang. With more muscular styling, a healthier chassis known as the Fox chassis, a heavily revised interior and a renewed sense of performance over efficiency, it quickly won hearts. The optional 5.0L V-8 was good for 140 HP and 239 ft-lb of torque, and the new chassis promised it could handle a lot more. With that, Ford designers and engineers worked on a number of new Mustangs, turning production cars into concepts that reflected performance, luxury and simple personalization. One of them is this Daytona concept built by Cars and Concepts in Brighton, Michigan. While five were built, this is thought to be the only model to have received every modification and is believed to be the only operable version of the five, one of which remains missing.
Powered by the 5.0L V-8 and 4-speed manual transmission, the Mustang was refinished in 2005 in its original shade of Vivid Red Orange using a base/clear paint. Other interesting modifications include the T-Tops, which were installed by Cars and Concepts and not available as a Mustang option until 1981; the full-length center console, the single-piece smoked grille panel with an etched running horse logo and housing 1979 Lincoln Versailles headlights, a smoked three-piece plastic rear panel that’s been custom etched by Cars and Concepts with “Ford Mustang” lettering, and more. The Medium Tan interior features front and rear bucket seats by Cars and Concepts, air conditioning, a tan leather headliner, sun visors for rear seat occupants, a custom three-spoke leather-trimmed steering wheel, smoked plastic detailing and more. Rolling on BFGoodrich tires with Dayton wire wheels that mimic the original Borrani wire wheels that came on the car, a set of Ansen 5-slot alloy wheels with BFGoodrich tires accompanies the car. Displayed at the Ford booths of the 1979 New York, Chicago and Detroit auto shows, this Mustang Daytona concept car also served as a pace car for the 1979 Daytona Road Course events. A resident of the Henry Ford Museum for two decades, the car was sold into private hands, who shared it with a multitude of publications and events to broaden the public’s awareness of the car. During this time, the car also won a number of awards. A remarkable opportunity to acquire a truly inimitable piece of automotive, Ford and Mustang history, this Mustang Daytona by Cars and Concepts is certain to be a crown jewel in any collection."
